"It was somewhere during the bowling alley dance scene that I realized I was absolutely in love withBefore I Disappear, an involving and disarmingly unique picture from writer/director/star Shawn Christensen. He plays a total burn-out whose plans for suicide are unexpectedly waylaid by a plea from his estranged sister to look after his type-A, know-it-all niece (the dynamite Fatima Ptacek). Christensen's stylish direction has a dreamy, hypnotic quality, which is well-matched to the unpredictability of the subjective storytelling; he stumbles through this New York nightscape, and we piece this thing together as he does. Every character has their own unique voice, even those that can be easily drawn and played as cliches, and Christensen lands on a tone that I can't quite pin down, but it's perfect. Enthralling and engrossing, it's a true original, and exactly the kind of little gem you hope to discover at a festival like this one."

We are very pleased to announce the launch of TellTale New York art classes, where we will explore and celebrate the weirdly wonderful world of kids’ imaginations. Each workshop cycle will consist of 5 classes, concluding with the final and very exciting Big Show: a reading and dance performance to wow parents with all the cool stuff their kids imagined up. Because the classes build upon one another, we ask that your child attend all classes if at all possible, in order to participate in the final performance.
The first workshop cycle will feature Amanda Gillespie, teaching creative writing, and the amazing actor and choreographer, Allison Plamondon, who will instruct in dance (bios below).
Age group: 4-6
Time: 1-4 PM, Sundays
Dates: October 19, October 26, November 2, November 9, November 16 (final class and The Big Show!)
Cost: $60 per class, or $250 one-time fee including all classes
Location: 35 West 31st Street, 8th Floor (cross-street Broadway, 34th Street subway stop)
TellTale Writing: Write a Book!
Kids have a beautifully strong and early instinct for story, and this workshop intends to, first, help them realize what they already know, and then enable them to develop that knowledge. Each workshop will teach a different facet of storytelling (character development, obstacles and conflicts, description, and resolution), with the end result being a complete book written by your brilliant little kid. Yes! It will be as adorable as it sounds! But as importantly, they’ll learn new words and storytelling tools in the process. The final result will be a book authored by your child, utilizing these tools, and read aloud at the Big Show at the end.
After writing, we will pause for a brief break and snack, and then–look out–onto the dance floor!
TellTale Dance: Movement Meets Imagination!
In Allison’s “movement meets imagination” classes, we will draw on our favorite moves from Jazz, Tap, Musical Theatre and Hip-hop to discover dance through storytelling. Students will create characters utilizing their imaginations, their entire bodies, and having loads of fun. (Think of all that energy they’d be using to jump on the sofa at home diverted into a fun dance and choreography exercise).
Parents will get to experience the final dazzling result on the final night of the Big Show!
Kindly RSVP at least 24 hours in advance of class-time using the contact information below. We will provide all materials necessary including snacks. Before each class, we will send an email, describing the lesson as well as what snack we will provide; if you do not want your child to have the class snack and would rather he or she bring one from home, kindly let us know. Children should wear comfortable clothes and shoes with rubber soles for dancing.
The classes will be held in a beautiful and spacious loft in Midtown Manhattan. If your little one is allergic, please note that there are cats in the space (which will be contained in a single room during classes). Parents are encouraged to enjoy the free time and return to the 5-10 minutes before 4. After each class, we will send a description of what we worked on as well as live-action photos of your kids working on cool stuff and building new muscles of imagination. See you there! Please feel free to contact us to reserve a spot or ask any questions about these or upcoming classes. We’d love to hear from you.
